<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6a3e55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d6a3e55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I\u2019ve been involved in a lot of interesting projects over my career.\u00a0 Some of the more significant ones include taking part in developing inspection techniques to be implemented in an asset owner\u2019s in-service inspection program, developing guided wave procedures and techniques for inspection of process piping, and developing procedures and techniques for inspecting high energy piping for in-service damage.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e0d2cc e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4e0d2cc\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d72974f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d72974f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What are your preferred techniques or methods in Ultrasound NDT?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c8d112 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c8d112\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><u>In-Service Inspections<\/u><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>I find in-service inspections to be more interesting than inspections in production environments.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 In-Service cracks can occur in any orientation, in any direction, and be of any size from microscopic to massive. That keeps you on your toes.\u00a0 Also, once indications are detected, then an investigation usually begins to determine both the indication cause, and how detrimental it is to the service life of the component.\u00a0 This generally involves doing a <strong>deep dive into the asset\u2019s inspection history<\/strong>, and reviewing the expected damage mechanisms based on the service history.\u00a0 This is usually followed up by collaboration with experts from multiple disciplines to determine a path forward including FFS engineers, process engineers, and metallurgists among others.<\/p><p><strong><u>Stainless Steel \/Coarse Grained Weld Inspections<\/u><\/strong><\/p><p>Coarse grained welds present unique challenges not found in typical carbon and low alloy welds.\u00a0 Standard shear wave techniques of coarse grained welds typically need to be modified to include supplemental techniques such as refracted longitudinal waves to properly evaluate the as-welded portion of the material.\u00a0 <strong>I find it much more interesting to work on complex grain structure materials than standard carbon steel.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de2a88a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"de2a88a\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36dcf52 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"36dcf52\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d772963 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"d772963\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9d8ed16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9d8ed16\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in the field?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c02f20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c02f20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First and foremost listening to customers.\u00a0 <strong>All customers have pain points<\/strong>, such as equipment that is difficult to inspect, and\/or equipment which is susceptible to damage mechanisms which don\u2019t easily lend themselves to detection with standard NDT methods.\u00a0 Once the problems have been identified, then the search for solutions can begin.\u00a0 The first step primarily involves doing some research to identify the current inspection techniques and where they fall short. The next step may involve reaching out to equipment manufactures to develop custom solutions.\u00a0<strong> That\u2019s how I originally discovered TPAC.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Through a combination of hardware and software they were able to provide a unique solution for detection of a historically very difficult type of crack to detect<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tpac-ndt.cnindustries\/power-generation-and-wind-turbine-industry\/\">power generation industry<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div elementor-size-default\">What trends do you see shaping the future of Ultrasound NDT?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c935fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c935fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><u>AI<\/u><\/strong><\/p><p>I know it\u2019s a buzzword everyone likes to use, but<strong> I don\u2019t believe most people in the NDT industry have fully considered its long term implications.\u00a0<\/strong> From the multitude of studies done on POD (Probability of Detection) it\u2019s clear that there is a wide range of skill level among Level 2 inspectors (and even good ones have bad days).\u00a0 I believe AI, initially in the form of assisted analysis, and long term in the form of full analysis has the potential to provide asset Owners with a <strong>much higher degree of confidence <\/strong>that a particular inspection will adequately identify and characterize the indications necessary to make an informed decision on the continued service of the component.<\/p><p><strong><u>High Temperature UT Inspections<\/u><\/strong><\/p><p>Asset owners are constantly searching for <strong>ways to both extend the life of aging equipment and to properly budget and plan for equipment replacement.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p><p>The term \u201cdiscovery work\u201d is a common term used in industry for <strong>inspections which must be performed during shutdown<\/strong>.\u00a0 To that end, on-stream high temperature UT inspections have the ability to not only reduce the amount of unexpected shutdown discoveries, but also monitor existing indications from a Fit-For-Services perspective.\u00a0 Because of this they are <strong>increasingly playing a more significant role<\/strong> in inspection programs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13dc862 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"13dc862\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13778b5 elementor-widget skills to master.<\/strong> Everyone has a unique perspective and skill set. From the welder, to the pipe fitter, to the software programmer.\u00a0 Absorbing information from everyone involved in the project, especially when it\u2019s in someones area of expertise, is critical to the success of any project.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element how the UT industry has advanced over the past 20-25 years of my career.\u00a0 <strong>I\u2019ve watched the transition from high temperature PAUT not being possible, to 300F-400F being a run of the mill inspection.<\/strong><\/p><p>I\u2019ve also taken part in the evolution of PAUT of coarse-grained welds.\u00a0<\/p><p>Currently I\u2019m most interested in FMC, specifically from the perspective of <strong>understanding how existing and new reconstruction algorithms may be used to improve current inspection techniques<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-53ae654 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"53ae654\" hours, and had some degree of travel.\u00a0 It can be difficult balancing travel or long hours with home life, but at the same I think I\u2019d be bored if I was in a typical day job.\u00a0 But, in the end, it\u2019s the field I\u2019ve chosen.\u00a0 <strong>Vessels and pipes don\u2019t only explode Monday through Friday<\/strong> between 9am and
